BRASS CASTING PROCESS:
Our brass objects are cast using one of the oldest traditional casting techniques, known as Lost Wax casting dating back over 6000 years.
Our craftsman based in a small enclave of villages in Indonesia, spend many weeks making these molds, firstly carving the design intricately in wax which is then replicated in clay versions and placed out in the sun to dry naturally. The clay mold then has a thick layer of wax applied and once dry has a fine volcanic sand packed around it in a casting box ready to be poured. Brass is then melted until molten, poured into the mold eroding the wax layer to form the brass Object. This process is time consuming but the end result in breaking the volcanic sand away from the set brass reveals a truly unique brass object as a result of its hand casting techniques. Dependent on the intricacy, some pieces are cast in several sections such as our Mr Pinchy crabs. The legs and claws are then joined to the body using a very specialised brass welding technique. This process carries a true provenance and slow made effort that is invested in each and every piece.
Before sending out every piece is hand polished in our Australian studio to a high shine finish, packaged and sent to its new home. Should you wish to maintain your brass in this finish please see our Product Care page. Alternatively your brass will patina over time.
